For years I've used the "Caged Gorilla" research story to drive home a point that our controlled repetitive environments create a "container" for our lives to live in and we can easily fall into habits and routines that stifle our initiative, our creativity, and our desire for an exciting and expanding life.
The story goes that a captured gorilla who displayed dominance, drive, determination, courage, power, and strength was put inside of a cage and everyday he would struggle and fight by grabbing the cage and trying to break out of it, he would show aggression and an absolute will to be free from captivity. Day after day he would do this and when he did, his captors would punish him by cracking a stick across his knuckles or poke him with a cattle prod to get him to calm down and "behave". Teaching him that escape was impossible. As time went on, the gorilla fought his captivity less and less until one day, he stopped fighting all together. It was at this point that his captors opened his cage and allowed him to come out into a larger enclosure, but what happened next surprised them. The gorilla would not come out of his cage, even with the top door completely open...he would not move, he had no desire or will to leave the cage. He surrendered his will to his environment and decided that this reality...was his true reality. The same thing happens to our lives, we accept the rules and limitations of society that we learn from others who tell us this is the way it is. We see proof of their information all over the place and over time we lose our desire to grow, to expand, and to CREATE the life we want. Instead we believe that this reality...is our true reality. But is it, or is it just what we've come to accept of our environment until we cannot even see that our cage door is always open? Don't settle for whatever life brings you! Go out and CREATE the life, the dreams, the visions, and the experiences that YOU want! Destroy the cage and live life wildly!
